Here's a link to a video on YouTube of the Northern California Dance Collective's summer dance camp, made by some SoCal dance camp fans. It's not in Davis -- it's near Fresno -- but it's worth a few hours' drive, so check it out, and then register to come to camp! The dates this year are June 13-22. It's 9 days of heaven, like living in a village of dancers in the mountains, with great vegetarian meals, Kids Camp for the little ones, a lake, work-exchange opportunities, and an amazing community of people. Prices go up after June 1, so you save money if you register sooner rather than later. You can also check ncdcdances.org/ for lots of info and photos from previous camps.

keep dancing!

Hey there, Davis Dancers --

Here's the news on a couple of great opportunities to escape the heat and dance your a** off an hour outside of Fresno, in the southern Sierras.

NCDC Summer Camp, June 13-22, (ncdcdances.org) is more of a hippie/alternative camp -- vegetarian meals, progressive culture, clothing-optional waterfront, classes in all kinds of movement, art, and personal growth modalities, including contact improv, 5 Rhythms, African dance, yoga, authentic movement, Body Tales, breathwork and more. The participants are "dance-a-holics" from mostly the Bay area, branching out into Oregon and Washington and nothern and southern California. The classes are mostly beginner-level or mixed-level and most of the participants are white. There' s a great Kids Camp program so parents can dance and their kids will be taken care of.

Camp Fareta, July 6-13, (dancingvillage.com) is for folks who are into West African drum and dance (mostly Guinea-style, some artists from Senegal and Mali). There are some beginner-level classes but most classes are pretty fast-paced, geared to people who have some experience in this form. The meals cater to both vegetarians and meat-eaters, including some African food, and everyone keeps their swimsuit on at the waterfront! The participants come from all over the world, mostly the west coast but also Japan, Canada, Australia, etc. etc., and it's very racially diverse. There's a Kids Camp program there as well.

Both events happen at Camp Hye Sierra, which has a small lake for swimming and boating, hiking trails nearby, an open-air pavilion for dancing, a volleyball court, and lots of fully-enclosed cabins as well as room for camping.

So check it out, and keep on dancing!

I haven't been to the Whole Earth Festival in a while, but I remember there was always a great drum-n-dance scene there. Now I'm involved with Camp Fareta, a West African drum and dance camp happening July 8-15 in central California (an hour east of Fresno in the southern Sierras) and I'm wondering how to get the word out in Davis. Does anyone know who's teaching African drum or dance there, or the best drum shop or health food store for posting flyers? It's a great event, and I want to make sure those who might be interested can find out about it.

Youssouf Koumbassa is the "host" and main dance teacher, and there's lots of information on his website, westafricandance.com. Check it out and spread the word!
Ok, so if you haven't heard I am putting together a folk dance group. Several people have been asking me through the years when I will be active again and when there will be classes. I hope this answers everyones questions. Listed below is a brief description of an ongoing project that I am very excieted about. It will allow opportunities for people to have continued growth experience. Short term or individual classes I will be assisting the Kali Ma with during SCA events as funds raisers only.

We will be focused on learning and performing Dances or Music from the Middle East, Asia and Africa that are Folk or Folk Fusion or Tribal in essence. I will assist in primary dance instruction however, additional classes and instructors will be part or our growth and developemnt. We will not be demonstrating American Tribal or Cabaret Dances.
Our goal will be the obvious exercise benefits but also a social group that can be used as an educational demonstration and personal development and exploration. Performance locations will be determined by group selection and classes will very depending on group development. Fees will not be charged for classes however, every dancer will be responsable for his/her own costuming or possible event expenses. Guest instructors may bill their own fees and would be optional.

Requirements-
1. Dance or Performance experience preferred, however NOT required.

2. I am looking for volunteers who are able to make a weekly commitment or possibly more depending on the performance listings the group elects.

3. Every participant should be interested in long term commitment of this project. Performance developemnt of each individual will be encouraged and required.

4. Many dance forms will be studied, an open mind for development is a must.

5. Positive attitude and social encouragement will be required.

6. Every participant should have availability to practice in their offtime. Homework of additional classes may be assigned as necessary.
